Keep Your Sweaters In Rotation

From cashmere classics to chunky thrift finds, sweaters deserve care that keeps them cozy for years. Extend their life with these simple tips. No sweater belongs in the trash. Even when it is not in your rotation, keep it in shape so you can pass it on for someone else to love.

1. Wash Sparingly

Less washing means longer life. Sweaters do not need frequent laundering. Most moth holes start on the front of sweaters, where food dribbles land. Larvae are drawn to the crumbs first, then keep nibbling on the wool. Spot clean those areas and wash only when truly needed.
Less washing means softer fibers and longer lasting knits.

2. Hand Wash with Care

Cold and gentle wins. Use cool water and a wool-safe detergent like SOAK or Eucalan. Both are leave-in, fiber-friendly, and made for knits.
Avoid hot water since it causes shrinkage and felting.

3. Dry Flat, Not Hung

Never hang wet sweaters. The weight of water stretches knits and warps shoulders. Lay flat on a towel, press out excess water, and reshape as they dry.
Flat drying prevents sagging and shoulder bumps.

4. Keep Moths Away

It is not the moths, it is the larvae. They feed on protein, which is why holes often show up on the front of sweaters. Always spot clean after wearing, especially in that area, and rotate your knits often. Movement makes it harder for larvae to settle in.
Store folded in breathable bags with cedar or lavender. Skip sealed plastic bins since they trap moisture.

5. Refresh Between Wears

Skip a wash to keep the shape. Air sweaters out or lightly steam to release odors and wrinkles. Steaming kills larvae and revives fibers.
Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

6. Repair and Renew

Holes, snags, pulls, and pills are our specialty. At FXRY, we re-knit holes, fix pulls, and de-pill sweaters so they stay in rotation. Sometimes a repair adds character and sometimes it makes your knit look brand new.
Better than replacement. Always.
